UAE residents applying for a Spain visa must now book appointments directly through the Spain visa self-booking system on the BLS International website, with no travel agents or other intermediaries permitted to make bookings on their behalf.
BLS International, which manages Spain’s visa application centres in the UAE through its wholly owned subsidiary BLS International FZE, announced the change in a notice on its website. The company said it acted ‘in response to evolving market demands and to enhance our technical infrastructure.’
Any appointment made through a third party will be rejected at the Visa Application Centre (VAC). ‘During the appointment booking process, the system verifies that the applicant is booking his/her appointment themselves,’ BLS said.
How the Spain visa self-booking system works
The change is backed by automated verification built into the booking workflow. BLS International’s liveness detection technology, deployed across more than 20 countries where it manages visa appointment systems, has blocked over 700,000 bot-driven booking attempts since its introduction, according to the company.
Booking a slot on the BLS website is free. The company warned applicants not to pay individuals or websites claiming to sell earlier appointments or guaranteed processing. BLS said its staff will never ask for cash or any other payment to secure an appointment, speed up processing, or influence a visa decision.
Visa decisions rest solely with Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. BLS said it plays no role in approving or rejecting applications, and applicants who receive suspicious payment requests or offers of special assistance should report them through BLS’s official complaint channels.
Applicants cannot reschedule an existing appointment. To change a slot, the current booking must be cancelled and a new one made. Any BLS service fees paid online at the time of booking are non-refundable, including where an appointment is cancelled or missed.
What else changes for Spain Schengen visa applicants in the UAE
The updated rules also affect spouses of European Economic Area (EEA) and European Union citizens. EEA and EU spouses must now book appointments in advance and will no longer be accepted as walk-in applicants at the VAC.
Employer-issued No Objection Certificates and salary certificates carry stricter formatting requirements. Both documents must be signed by an authorised company representative whose full name, position, and Emirates ID number are clearly stated, or accompanied by a copy of the Emirates ID.
On travel insurance, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets the coverage threshold at a minimum of €30,000. The policy must cover urgent healthcare, emergency hospital treatment, medical evacuation, and repatriation for the full duration of the stay across the entire Schengen area. For multiple-entry visas, insurance must be valid for the first planned entry, and applicants must undertake to purchase cover for subsequent trips.
BLS International has managed Spain’s visa outsourcing contract since December 2016, operating across dozens of countries. According to its annual report for the financial year ended 31 March 2025, the company processes approximately 4 million visa applications a year and provides visa and consular services for more than 46 governments across 70 countries. Its earlier 2019-20 annual report recorded 122 Spain visa application centres across 47 countries at that time.
