The study looked at a 57-year-old man who was recommended to evaluate a history of night sweats for three to four years, and he should change the bed sheets every night.
Sweat only covered the upper part of his body at the level of the nipples from the top of the head to the middle of the chest and was worse after drinking alcohol.
“Vitamin B12 1,000 mcg daily for seven days and monthly injections are recommended based on elevated homocysteine levels,” the study points out.
He added: “The patient reported a dramatic sweating response after the second injection of vitamin B12 and was asymptomatic for three months following.
Another study, published by the National Library of Health, looked at vitamin B12 deficiency, which causes night sweats.
“It is known to cause a variety of neurological symptoms, including autonomic dysfunction.
Here are three common causes of night sweats that are thought to be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.
“All three responded significantly to vitamin B12 treatment.”
True night sweats are intense hot flashes that occur at night, soaking your clothes and sheets and not being associated with excessive heat.
They are described as attacks of intense sweating that can wet your night clothes or bed and are associated with an underlying medical condition or illness.
The exact mechanism by which vitamin B12 deficiency causes excessive sweating is subject to speculation and further studies are needed. Other symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include:
Weakness, fatigue or mild dizziness Heart palpitations and shortness of breath Pale tongue Mild tongue Constipation, Nervous problems such as diarrhea, Anorexia, Nerve numbness or tingling, Muscle weakness, Walking problem Loss of vision.
There are many causes for vitamin B12 deficiency but the main cause of vitamin B12 deficiency in the UK is malignant anemia.
Bernicious anemia is an autoimmune condition in which your immune system attacks the cells in your stomach, creating an underlying factor – a protein your body cannot absorb vitamin B12 from.
Some people may develop vitamin B12 deficiency as a result of not getting enough vitamin B12 from their diet.
Foods that include meat, fish and dairy products generally provide adequate vitamin B12, but those who do not eat these foods regularly can develop a deficiency.
