Entries open for Dubai women’s triathlon at Al Mamzar Beach Park on December 6

By GST 2 min read

Super Sprint and Sprint races for women aged 18 and over, solo or in relay teams of three, start at 7.10am at Al Mamzar Beach Park on December 6.

The World Triathlon Women’s Cup Dubai takes place at Al Mamzar Beach Park, Dubai, on Sunday, December 6, with Super Sprint and Sprint races for women aged 18 and over, and entries are now open.

Dubai Sports Council said on Monday, October 26, that the races cater for women of all abilities, from first-time triathletes to elite international athletes.

Amateur races start at 7.10am and the elite races follow at 12pm, so beginners and elite athletes compete at the same venue on the same day. The event website lists early bird spaces as limited.

The Super Sprint is a 400m swim, a 10km bike ride and a 2.5km run. It is designed to make a first triathlon achievable.

The Sprint is a step up, with a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.

Entrants must be female and aged 18 or over. Races can be done individually or as a relay team of up to three.

The organisers said that means women can race with friends, family or colleagues, and anyone nervous about the swim can hand that leg to a teammate.

Within the race, a separate competition recognises the top three Emirati finishers in both the individual and team categories, with first, second and third place awarded in each.

According to the event website, athletes swim in the Arabian Gulf, cycle along routes in the park and run beachside, with the Dubai skyline as the backdrop.

The event is organised by Dubai Sports Council in partnership with World Triathlon and in collaboration with the UAE Triathlon Federation.

It is the second World Triathlon Women’s Cup held anywhere in the world, and the organisers describe it as the only event of its kind dedicated entirely to women.

Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, said the aim is a lasting platform for women’s sport. “Whether you are an experienced triathlete or have never tried the sport before, there is a race here for you,” he said.

Debbie Alexander, Vice President of World Triathlon, said the format lets women racing a first triathlon watch and compete at the same venue as the elites. “Such events, where women racing their first ever triathlon can watch and compete at the same venue as the Elites, are what makes our sport and this event so special,” she said.

Entry prices are not published. Registration is through the event website, which welcomes first-time female triathletes.
