The best ways to spend time with loved ones this week

This week leads us into the Holy Month where many of us will be reflecting inwards, looking outwards and taking stock of what is most important. Let’s dedicate this week to our most cherished humans, and to enjoying time spent with them.

Sunday, 28th April

Artistic frontiers

Médecins Sans Frontières, in collaboration with Alliance Francaise and the French Business Council, is bringing an exhibition entitled ‘Healing Wounds’ to Dubai. The shots were captured by Italian photographer and journalist Alessio Mamo in 2017 at the MSF Reconstructive Surgery Hospital in Amman, Jordan. Mamo’s subjects were severely injured soldiers from the Iraq War, and create a moving account of human relationships and overcoming adversity.

Free. Until 2nd May, 9am-5pm. La Galerie Alliance Francaise, Oud Metha. 04 335 8712.

Beach box office

Smash comedy Bridesmaids, yep the one with ‘that plane scene,’ is playing at Zero Gravity’s cinema on the beach on Sunday. Tickets are 50 dizzas, but you get that back as food and beverage credit. The movie stars the hilarious Kristen Wiig at her sparkling, self-depreciating best.

AED 50. 8pm-10.30pm. Zero Gravity, Sky Dive Dubai, Dubai Marina, 04 399 0009

Monday, 29th April

Festivities from Pharao way

Khofo AKA Dubai’s first ‘pharaonic’ themed restaurant is celebrating Sham El Nessim (the Egyptian holiday, marking the start of spring) and they’re inviting you to join in the jubilation. They’ll have a special menu for the week (with a grand buffet on the 3rd May) and guests will be treated to thrilling cultural performances including Tanoura, Al Zafah and ‘The Horse Dance.’

9am-1.30am, 29th April-2nd May.  2pm-7pm, 3rd May. Khofo, Al Seef, Dubai Creek. 04 388 5005.

Careful whisper

Fastlove has come directly from London’s theatre district to the stage at Dubai Opera. It features a collection of the late, and indisputably great, George Michael’s most memorable hits. The show is delivered by a cast of world-class singers and dancers, and we put it to you…if you can listen to Careless Whisper, and not sway to the heavy sax chorus – you’re a rock.

From AED 95. 8pm-11pm. Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai.

Austen, but not as we know it

Those talented players at the Courtyard Playhouse will be performing an extremely dangerous stunt on Monday. They’ll be playing fast and loose, improvising with the beloved writings of Jane Austen. If you’ve always fancied a different end to ‘Pride and Prejudice’, or wished ‘Sense and Sensibility’ had been set in Karama – this could be your night.

Donations appreciated on the door. 8pm-10pm. The Courtyard Playhouse, Al Quoz. 055 967 3927

Tuesday, 30th April

Music on the menu

The latest round of the curiosity pop-up, ‘#DXBExperiments Presents’ is WTF Music Rebels. It’s an evening of blended beverages, iconic musician look-a-likes, and a seriously indulgent feast. Chomp through yellow tail and Wagyu tenderloin to a soundtrack that visits multiple musical decades of the 20th century. Just be careful, you know what they say about meeting your idols.

AED 395 (includes unlimited sharing platters and select beverages). 1pm to 4pm. Weslodge Saloon, JW Marriott Marquis, Dubai, 04 560 1700.

Wednesday, 1st May

The show will go on

The celebration of music legends-passed is not done yet. Regal Queen tribute band, Majesty will be on-board and on-form at the QE2 for a three-night run of stadium rock bangers. The set list includes tracks like ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘I Want to Break Free’, ‘Somebody to Love’, ‘Radio Ga Ga’ and of course – rather fittingly, ‘The Show Must Go On’. We’re not crying, you’re crying.

Tickets from AED 180. 8pm-11pm, 1st May-3rd May. Queen Elizabeth 2, Mina Rashid Marina.

First Ramadan

New parents, parents with baby, new mums, family, newborn

Malaak Mama & Baby Care will be inviting new mothers to come along to a fascinating discussion about new borns and Ramadan. Founder Cecile will speak from 25 years worth of midwife experience on subjects like feeding and sleep cycles. There’ll also be refreshments and gifts for everybody that attends.

Free. 10am-12pm. Babyshop, Mall of the Emirates. 055 329 7099.

Hard rock, heavy metal

Metal fans, prepare to head-bang fiercely (in the distance, a metal vocalist screams). Pioneers of the genre, Sepultura, are in town for a one-off gig. The Brazilian thrash maestros will be supported by local metal outfit, Nervecell for a night of amp-shattering rarrrgghhh.
