It’s International Yoga Day this week so let’s say ‘namaste’ to the ancient art.
Yoga has taken the world by storm in recent years and has become an important part of many people’s lives globally, despite growing out of India more than 5,000 years ago.
We even have a whole day dedicated to the practice thanks to Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, and the United Nations, with International Yoga Day celebrated annually on 21st June. This year, the UAE will mostly assume the lotus position on 20th June, owing to the Holy Night Laylat Al-Qadr falling on the 21st.
This year’s theme
The third annual International Yoga Day is ‘Yoga for Health’. To celebrate, we’re sharing the benefits of yoga outside of the studio.
We talk to UAE yoga instructor Sasha Quince (pictured above) to find out what yoga means to her and the benefits it can bring.
Pretty much everyone we know has been to at least one yoga class. Why does everyone heart yoga so much?
She says: “Yoga has a power to make you feel. People come back time and time again to yoga because they feel peace, happiness, they rest better, and they feel less stressed.”
Sasha, who has been practising for more than eight years, adds: “I can’t imagine my life without yoga. I love that I feel new, energised, and awake. It’s like I am seeing the world anew and I am mindful of my words, my actions and my own self-judgement after I practice. It helps me be a better person, a better mother and offer more to anyone I interact with.”
International Yoga Day in Dubai
Classes of all styles are taking place across the emirate and we’ve even found one that’s free.
Yogis can fail to feel tranquil during ‘underwater’ yoga at the Lost Chambers Aquarium, Atlantis The Palm.
The class is free and includes water, a yoga mat, towels, water and access to the The Lost Chambers until 10am, but booking is essential.
Can’t make tomorrow? Classes will be every Tuesday and Friday for AED 120 per person.
Tuesday, 20th June. 7.30am-8.30am. Atlantis The Palm. Book at www.atlantisthepalm.com or call 04 426 2000.
A gentle flow class will calm the mind, whereas for those who aren’t fasting, three-courses of sharing platters enhance the community vibe.
We’re sure you’ll agree freshly-pressed juices, falafel and rice paper rolls are worth working up a sweat for.
Bendy but broke? Sportswear brand lululemon has teamed up with 136.1 Yoga Studio for a free day of yoga and stretching classes.
The yoga-thon starts at 7.30am-8.30pm and picks up again 7.30pm-9pm, with everything from sun salutations to savasana. There’ll also be a pop-up lululemon store for all your yoga needs.
Trident Bayside, first floor, Dubai Marina. Full schedule here. Call 04 441 6287 to book your spot.
