Those who are itching to get their hands on the first batch of the fully electric Tesla vehicles, can now visit the online design studio to customise and place their orders. All cars ordered now will be delivered in Dubai this summer.

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) are first in line, and just signed an agreement with Tesla Inc. to buy 200 hybrid electric vehicles fitted with several components of autonomous driving technologies. The new vehicles will add to the limousine fleet of the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC).

HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of RTA says: “This agreement is in implementation of the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the world’s smartest city, and the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative.

“It is also part of the Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobility Strategy aimed at transforming 25% of total journeys in Dubai into autonomous journeys by 2030.”

The official Tesla store is currently under construction on Sheikh Zayed Road, by the second interchange, but for now fans can head to the pop-up store in The Dubai Mall.

Elon Musk, the brains behind Tesla (as well as SpaceX and PayPal), is a man with big plans for this world.

The South African-born billionaire entrepreneur has constantly proven that are no limits to his work, after redefining transportation on not only Earth, and in space.

Today, he officially launches Tesla and its electric charging stations – the Supercharger and Destination – in Dubai.

All the cars made since October last year have the sensor system that will enable full autonomy – 360 degree cameras, high precision ultrasonic sonar, and more.

“We keep improving the software over time, so the car gets better the longer you own it,” says Musk.

So what’s it like?

“It’s really fun!” exclaims Musk. “If you want true unadulterated joy on tap, whenever you want, this is the car to get.”

“It’s hard to describe. You have to experience it,” he adds.

Those who have already imported the cars to the UAE will be glad to know that Tesla has already started deploying more chargers within the region, allowing drivers to recharge their vehicles in minutes.

“We have two Supercharger sites [The Last Exit in Jebel Ali and in Masdar City], 26 Destination chargers [hotels and shopping malls], but throughout the year we’re going to be building [50] more Supercharger locations to allow travel throughout the region,” Elon Musk tells us.

Model S:

The award-winning Model S is designed to be the safest, most exhilarating car on the road. The electric vehicle has a range of up to 632km (NEDC), and accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in just 2.4 seconds.

“With a combination of software upgrades and mass reductions, this is the fastest time of any car ever,” explains Musk. “In terms of safety, it’s still the safest car ever tested by the U.S government.”

Prices start from AED 275,000 for Model S

Model X:

Model X on the other hand is the fastest and most capable sport utility vehicle on the road – accelerating from zero to 100 kph in as quickly as 3.1 seconds. It’s super safe, with standard all-wheel drive and up to 565 km of range (NEDC) on a single charge. Model X fits an active lifestyle and includes ample seating for seven adults and all of their gear.
