Perk up your morning commute with this podcast by Dubai students

Somewhere between motivating music or an easy-to-read book, podcasts are an ideal way to get through the daily commute.

They bring fashion, art, science, history and politics straight to our earphones in handy digital bites, but did you know there’s a new podcast that’s just about Dubai?

The Dubai Wave Podcast is produced by students from the American University in Dubai.

Digital media professor Spencer Striker launched the project to give young people the chance to learn the art of audio blogging, and in turn they put the mic in front of some of Dubai’s most quotable bloggers – as well as a MMA fighter, tech conference founder and some gregarious fellow podcasters.

Spencer Striker said students on the Digital Podcast Production course deliberately sought out big personalities that wouldn’t wilt under the spotlight.

Spencer, right, and the team in action.

Leader producer Basma Choucri, an AUD Advertising major and art lead Lujain Mahmoud, who’s majoring in Digital Media in AUD, were pleasantly surprised how responsive potential guests were, and with their infectious enthusiasm, we’re not astonished at all.

You can hear all six episodes at www.dubaiwave.co or download them through popular podcast apps. Future episodes include what’s bound to be very meta chat with the third culture kids at Dubai-based podcast Dukkan.

Another four podcasts will be coming over the summer and this week Spencer is in the top 10 finalists of the Dubai Smartpreneur competition at the ArabNet Digital Summit, with his app Big History Adventures, the aim of which is to revolutionise education for the 21st century.

More Dubai podcasts:

  • Ok, so it’s in Italian. But Dubai Rock and Roll plays tunes that sound great in any language.
  • Third culture chatter that’s like hanging out with your really cool friends? That’s pretty much every lovely episode of Dukkan.
  • Kerning Cultures is a little bit of everything that’s good about the Middle East, from a team of thoughtful entrepreneurs that don’t skimp on the research.
