Drivers who are safer on the roads will pay less for their insurance. Seems like a no brainer, especially if you’re one of the rare breeds who indicates, slows down for junctions and never cuts up other motorists.
Now an insurance firm is seeking to redress to balance with a solution to reward better drivers using artificial intelligence and a mobile app. Yep, although it’s illegal to use your phone at the wheel, having it with you could equal a discount on your annual premium.
How does it work?
Once you’ve bought the car insurance from I-Insured; download the SafeDriver Pay-How-You-Drive (PHYD) app, which works on Android/iOs phones, and keep it running while you’re driving. The clever gizmo automatically detects who’s driving the car and generates a ‘safe driving score’ using “advanced artificial intelligence”.
To keep their 30 per cent discount, which is given up front, customers must drive safely and keep their safe driving score above 76 points, on a scale of one to 100. Harsh braking, mobile use and speeding will see points taken off.40 traffic laws that all drivers in Dubai need to know
I-Insured says the new technology is part of the UAE Vision 2021 aims to reduce traffic casualties from about six per 100,000 people to three per 100,000.
It also has the backing of road safety campaigners. Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafety UAE, says: “Worldwide, drivers using technology to score how safe they drive are significantly less exposed to accidents and thereby actively contribute to safer roads. The i-Insured solution rewards drivers up front – and not when the policy is up for renewal after one year – this will motivate many drivers to be safe and lessen accidents on the roads.”
For those worried about privacy, the insurer will gather data based on how the drivers behave behind the wheel, but will not be able to view where they are. Although it doesn’t need a data or Wi-Fi connection, it works better when you’re online.
