October is breast cancer awareness month. Here’s how you can support cancer patients and keep yourself in the best of health.
Join fundraising events and book in for a mammogram, because early detection can save lives of the one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer. Speak to your health insurance company to make sure you’re covered, or go for one of the a free check-ups listed below.
Fitness First Pink Zumba Party
Join hundreds of women (and kids over six) for a Zumba party at the Collegiate American School, Umm Suqeim. Along with the fast-paced, hip-shaking workout that you’re encouraged to wear pink for, gym goers get info about breast cancer early warning signs and hear talks from a doctor and a breast cancer survivor. Zumba kids is from 6pm, while ladies get their turn at 7pm.

Al Ghurair Centre
Artworks by breast cancer survivors and fighters hang at the Al Ghurair Centre throughout October. Find the creations of Karishma Hansen, Shiba Khan, Shibina Ann Cherian, Noura Mostafa, Aisha Yosuf Al Shemaili, Gomathi Shiva, Sarah Ahmed, Ammarah Khalid and Haroon Raja, on the ground floor, adjacent to Marks & Spencer. All of the art in the Woman2Woman curated Think Pink collection are for sale.

Women aged 40 and up can have a health consultation for free at Mediclinic branches during October. During the one-to-one with a doc, they’ll evaluate your family history and you can get any concerns out in the open. You’ll be offered a discount off any mammogram or ultrasound screening that’s advised too.

Sign up at a dedicated website and Zulekha Hospitals will give you a free mammogram as part of the ‘Pink it Now’ campaign that’s in its seventh year. There are branches of the hospital in Al Qusais Industrial Area and Sharjah.

University Hospital Sharjah
A first-of-its-kind Pink Caravan Mobile Screening Clinic offers free cancer screening and early detection services from University Hospital Sharjah (UHS). All its referrals go to the UHS-based Sharjah Breast Care Centre and patients there get 50 per cent off all follow-up treatments. Pink Caravan organisers Friends of Cancer Patients covers costs for anyone without health insurance or who’s struggling financially.

Valiant Clinic, Breast Friends and the Al Jalila Foundation
This trio of cancer combatants invite us all to City Walk for an evening of breast cancer survivor talks, booths giving out information and the chance to speak with doctors and representatives of Al Jalila Foundation and Valiant Clinic Dubai. There are craft activities that all the family can enjoy too.
