Remember the traffic fines initiative that Dubai Police announced as part of the Year of the Tolerance?
Nearly half a million drivers have received discounts on fines by driving carefully.
From February 2019 onwards, if you ended up getting a ticket for speeding, or other motoring offences, it could be reduced or even cancelled.
- Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for three months get 25 per cent on the total existing fines.
- Those who do not commit any traffic offences for six months get 50 per cent off
- Don’t break any laws for nine months and get a 75 per cent reduction
- Motorists whose record stays clean for 12 months earn a 100 per cent reduction
So far, 457,154 drivers saw their financial penalties cut by a quarter. Now in its second phase, the initiative will see drivers who keep a clean sheet awarded discounts of up to 50 per cent. Nice!
The drive, which applies to all private vehicles registered in Dubai, but doesn’t include rental cars, has seen a drop in accidents and deaths on the emirate’s roads.
Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, assistant commander-in-chief for Operations at Dubai Police, said 43,947 accidents were reported during the initiative’s first quarter, compared to 48,247 during the same period in the previous year. The total number of deaths was 20, down on 29 in 2018, and the vehicles seized decreased by 19 per cent.
The year-long scheme, which was launched at the start of the Year of Tolerance, will eventually give drivers a whopping 100 per cent discount on fines – providing that they haven’t broke the law again over the next 12 months.
Driving safely is always important, but now it could also save you some cash!
