UPDATE: 50,000 have waved down and hopped on new bus service

Freej

Have you hopped on the Al Freej? The new bus service has ferried 50,000 passengers since its launch in July.

The J01 route covers more than 12km linking the suburbs of Jumeirah Village Circle, to Al Barsha 1-3 and the shopping hub of Mall of the Emirates.

FreejWhat makes it a little bit different – and hopefully even more useful – than standard bus services is that when it’s safe to do so, drivers can divert from the circular route of 23 stops to drop off disabled or elderly passengers.

Al Freej – which means ‘the neighbourhood’ in Arabic – has already proved a hit with commuters, with daily passengers numbers jumping from 428 at launch to 765 three months later, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said.

Al Freej“Through launching this service, RTA is seeking to bring more happiness to targeted brackets by offering them safe, enjoyable and smooth transit service availing them a chance to socialise with others and forge closer relationships amongst community members,” added Adel Shakri, director of Planning and Business Development of the RTA’s Public Transport Agency.
