Dubai Week

Be honest, is it time for you to take a digital detox?

SensAsia Digital Detox massage

We spend around 11 hours a day glued to screen of varying sizes and while that’s a lot of cat fail funnies, the trade-off is often aching back and shoulders.

Now there’s massage just for gadget grippers designed to take away the feeling of being ‘locked’ in to your electronic master.

SensAsia Urban Spa launched the Digital Detox as an antidote to our obsession with mobiles and tablets – yes, you do have ditch to your phone during the treatment.

Sleek but welcoming, the spa chain has relaxation down to a fine art after 14 years of pampering the people of the Middle East across four spas around Dubai. We head to the Downtown branch in Souk Al Manzil to wean off our screen. It’s right next-door to the always good Baker & Spice, if you need a self-congratulatory sugar rush afterwards.

After a friendly chat and a spot of form-filling, we swap shoes for slippers, robe up and head to a low-lit room, with our phone left safe in a locker.

Our therapist targets our neck, shoulders, arms and wrists, as requested, using oil then a herbal-smelling ‘magic green gel’ that warms as it touches. If the lower back is irksome too, then that can also be blitzed. Firm pressure and body weight extracts satisfying cracks and a few groans of pain from this social media slave. We ask that gel and oil are kept away from our hair and she’s happy to oblige.

The 45-minute upper body massage peaks when it’s performed three times in a week. We manage to squeeze in a trio over alternate days, though there’s a noticeable difference after just one. Pain around our shoulder and neck from over-enthusiastic keyboard bashing is gone.

Each session comes with time to chill afterwards, aided by a warm lavender neck compress, SensAsia Spa’s trademark post-treatment ginger tea and virtuous crudities. Book more than one and you’ll be rewarded with a discount from AED 350 for 45 minutes to AED 299.
